Happy Birthday Jer!
Today is Jer-day. If you don't know Jer - well, you should. He's the better half of us for sure and I see that everyday in a thousand ways he cares for, for our family and for everyone around him. I think it's cute that we agree lifestyle changes should optimally start on a Monday and if not a Monday then the 1st of a month. He knows my coffee order. Because of him I've watched way more foreign films than I ever dreamed I would and he's seen classics like The Return of the Mummy and Blue Crush in theaters (I'm a connoisseur of popcorn flicks and he indulges me).
Our epic romance (#jerandjoy #theadventuresofjandj) dates back to 2000 and it's been fun thinking about the experiences and elements that have shaped our story so far. Ellis Family by the numbers looks something like - 15 years married this May, 4 incredible kids (#4 isn't here yet, but clearly she'll be just as amazing as the other three), 3 advanced degrees, 3 lay-offs, 1 side-business, 1 life-altering special needs diagnosis, the passing of 4 grandparents, multiple trips to the ocean where we agree someday we really should live, three moves (two apartments and then our current home of 13 years), 1 trip to South Africa, Zimbabwe and Mozambique with a 13 month old, 1 trip to the UK (pre-kiddos), a ramble down the Florida Keys in the cutest VW Beetle Convertible resulting in epic sunburns and great memories, 2 ambulance rides - both for kiddos, 1 set of stitches, 2 burning bushes in the backyard (nope - not Moses moments just eliminating hornets gone awry) --and so many other numbers that mark our adventure together.
Our life isn't boring. No-one else can get the kids wound up at bed-time like he can, or fall asleep in .5 seconds like he does. He plans incredible experiences and if you're lucky you'll travel with a carefully curated soundtrack that crosses genres and eras. He's the first to wax euphoric about good food - from foodie to food truck and everything in between and Taco Bell is a rule rather than the exception. He's generous, he's super smart, he's funny, compassionate and charming - oh, an movie-star handsome. He views every day as an adventure and laughter and Faith as essential to living his best life. Grace and patience exemplify the way he interacts with everyone. He dreams big and I have yet to see a challenge he can't take on and demolish!
Almost every major moment in our life together has been accompanied by a song - sometimes it's the same song that speaks to both of us and sometimes it's something unique that forms an auditory connection. Yes, we have some epic playlists :) The other day a song came on the radio and I couldn't help but smile at how it seems to sum up our relationship. It's called "The Bones" and it's recorded by Maren Morris who's new to the country music scene - you can give a listen below if you want to! Daily I'm thankful for an amazing partner and a relationship founded on 'good bones' like deep Faith, genuine respect and mutual appreciation (just to name a few elements). Happy Birthday Jer!
