Captain's Log - Day 2.5

Whelp - here we are on Day 2.5 (only halfway through day 3 lol) and it's prompting all kinds of thoughts.  Campus suspended classes for spring break (with adaptations at the conclusion) but school for the kids launched into prevention mode full scale - and I support this! Our quarantine started off with a bang - J was home from school Friday with pinkeye and the rest of us were just monitoring communication channels waiting to see if the anticipated closure would happen.  It's been an interesting 72 or so hours and I thought I'd write a bit to clarify my thoughts for myself.

First, I shared with someone, I (and my imagination) really wish I had steered clear of Dean Koontz, Robin Cook and most specifically the book "Fifth Wave".  The resolution in these books rarely encourages optimism.  So off I go to bury my head in 'fluffy' fiction and some substantial Faith development.

Secondly, I'm really not a fan of news outlets and the generation of chaos.  I support freedom of speech and I advocate for elimination of monopoly BUT as a consumer of information when I need to determine authentic from overblown in the presence of challenging times that's not helpful! Thankfully sources like the CDC and WHO provide context and clarity.  Social media - well you've not been particularly my friend of late.

Thirdly, jealousy shows up in the oddest of places.  We have amazing children who are capable of incredible things especially when we encourage them to be themselves and to tap into their own timeline for growth.  That being said, I love the color-coded schedules and the ambitious plans for homeschooling.  However, trying to remind myself that envy serves no-one, Jamesey requires more attention than the typical 6 year-old.  Remembering that it's okay and employing patience and enjoying the chance to grow alongside him as we both adjust has been the tempo of the last few days.  While the other two will enjoy the virtual tours of museums, the games on the iPad, a few minutes to watch a movie - Disney Plus doesn't do it for Jamesey.  Distractions are shorter and fewer for my Jamesey rascal and I'm working on being okay with that.  My kids constantly make me a better person.  Side note - say a prayer for all your people with kiddos with special needs of any type whether it be schedule adjustments being difficult, missing therapies that have helped them progress and may result in regression, challenges for parents who are trying to balance normalcy as much as possible or other hard things. .

But, anyway...It's going to be memorable.  We have a few art projects up for fun, event planning (a birthday party for Anna, apple crisp to bake and fingers crossed naps to take and sunshine to frolic in.  Stay healthy friends and we'll be back! :)
